On 27 March 2023, a preview of the documentary El Olvido del Mar, produced by Spanish company Sintregua Comunicaciones, was presented at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. This feature-length film recounts the life and work of Odón de Buen, the distinguished personality from Aragon, who was born in Zuera in 1863 and was a free thinker, eminent scientist, naturalist, tireless promoter of knowledge and the father of Spanish oceanography.
Odón de Buen was one of Prince Albert I of Monaco’s disciples, in the fields of both oceanography and palaeontology. These two scientists, pioneers in oceanography, were behind the creation of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in 1914. Last October, H.S.H. Prince Albert II presented a commemorative plaque intended for the Spanish Institute during his visit as part of the commemorations of the centenary of Albert I’s death.
The Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum of the Principality of Monaco, as well as Monaco’s Embassy in Spain, contributed to the production of this documentary, showcasing the heritage bequeathed by Prince Albert I and Odón de Buen.
